After years of serving Staten Islanders behind closed doors, Staten Island Neighbors has officially opened its doors to everyone.
What began as a Facebook group has evolved into one of Staten Island’s largest online communities, and in a major milestone, the community recently transitioned from private to public.
The change reflects a simple idea: Staten Island itself is a public community. Its online town square should be too.
Instead of limiting conversations to existing members, important community discussions can now reach more neighbors, spread faster, and help more people than ever before.
Bigger Reach. Bigger Impact.
The results have been immediate.
Since becoming public, visibility across the community has increased dramatically. Facebook Insights show that posts are now reaching tens of thousands more people each day, with some days surpassing 120,000 daily views during major community conversations.
Even after those record-breaking spikes, daily visibility remains significantly higher than it was while the group was private.
This means:
- Lost pets can be seen by more neighbors.
- Emergency information spreads faster.
- Local recommendations reach a wider audience.
- Community news travels across Staten Island more quickly.
- More residents can discover and participate in local conversations.
Every post now has the potential to reach far beyond the group’s membership through shares and Facebook’s public recommendations.
A Digital Town Square for Staten Island
For years, Staten Island Neighbors has focused on connecting residents and the move to public reinforces that mission.
Whether someone is looking for a trusted recommendation, reporting a road closure, celebrating a local success story, searching for a lost pet, or asking neighbors for advice, the goal remains the same:
Bring the community together.
Growing Beyond Facebook
The organization has also continued expanding beyond social media.
Today, more than 300 local businesses have joined the SINeighbors.com network, creating a growing directory of trusted local businesses, community news, events, jobs, promotions, and giveaways—all designed to strengthen connections between residents and the local business community.
The Facebook community and SINeighbors.com now work together to help neighbors discover local information both on and off social media.
Even Greater Recognition
As the community continues to grow, its conversations are reaching well beyond Staten Island.
Posts from Staten Island Neighbors are increasingly being noticed and referenced by major media organizations, including outlets such as the New York Post, the Staten Island Advance, and other regional news organizations that monitor community conversations for developing stories.
It’s another sign of how influential the community has become in helping surface what’s happening across Staten Island.
A Community Built Together
What started years ago as a neighborhood Facebook group has grown into a recognized community organization serving tens of thousands of Staten Islanders every day.
While the technology continues to evolve, the mission has never changed:
Connect neighbors. Support local businesses. Strengthen the Staten Island community.
As Staten Island Neighbors enters this new chapter, the invitation is open to everyone.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident, new to Staten Island, or a local business looking to connect with the community, there’s never been a better time to get involved.
A new era has begun for Staten Island Neighbors. Together, we’ll continue building a stronger, more connected Staten Island—both online and throughout our community.
