STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — What started as a stressful shopping trip ended with an unforgettable act of kindness that has thousands of Staten Islanders smiling.
After finishing a grocery run at a Staten Island Stop & Shop, a local resident accidentally left her handbag inside a shopping cart before driving away. Moments later, she realized what had happened and rushed back to the store, only to find the cart still there—but the handbag was gone.
Store security reviewed surveillance footage and told the family that an older couple had picked up the bag and appeared to be looking around for its owner. With no sign of the handbag being turned in, hope began to fade.
Then came an unexpected knock at the front door.
A couple introducing themselves as Hiram and Yolanda had gone the extra mile. Rather than simply leaving the handbag with store employees, they took the time to identify its owner, locate the family’s home, and personally return the bag.
Everything inside was exactly as it had been left.
The family was able to FaceTime with the couple to thank them personally for their incredible honesty and kindness.
The story quickly resonated with Staten Islanders after being shared in the Staten Island Neighbors community, where thousands of residents celebrated the couple’s actions and shared similar experiences of strangers returning lost wallets, phones, and other valuables. Many said stories like this are a reminder that while negative news often dominates headlines, acts of kindness happen every day throughout the borough.
Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that leave the biggest impression.
For one Staten Island family, what could have been an incredibly stressful day instead became a reminder that good neighbors still exist—and that simple acts of honesty can restore faith in an entire community.
Thank you, Hiram and Yolanda, for showing what being a good neighbor is all about.
